Apalis iMX8 New Configurations
Introduction
Effective 2024, NXP announced changes to the processor used in our current product offerings on the Apalis iMX8 system-on-modules, designating the parts as NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs).
The NRND designation occurred due to NXP releasing new versions of the automotive SoC with derated A72 and GPU frequencies, same as of the Industrial variants. For more details, check errata #6 from the Apalis iMX8 SoM Errata.
In response to that, we would like to inform you that Toradex will launch new product configurations featuring the Industrial qualified parts.
How Does This Impact You ?
The recommendation for existing Apalis iMX8 customers is to:
- Test and move your product to the new configuration, with the Industrial SoC
With this change, you (1) mitigate possible functional failures on the automotive SoC, you (2) get an industrial-qualified chip – meaning it can operate for longer times, with an increased lifespan, and you (3) get a slightly lower cost SoM overall. There is no expected effort in migrating to the new Apalis iMX8, they are Hardware and Software compatible.
If you cannot switch to the new configuration, the existing configurations of the Apalis iMX8, which use the NRND automotive-qualified parts, will be available and support will continue for as long as the longevity commitment of the processor. To keep using this configuration you can either:
- Derate Cortex-A72 and GPU frequencies to mitigate possible functional failures, as these failures are seen to be connected with high resource demand on this SoC
- Keep the clocks as they currently are, and thoroughly test your application in high demanding scenarios
Samples of the new product configurations are expected to be available in Q1/2025. We will continue to keep you informed with updates on availability and technical details as we approach the release date.
